Light is
a sentence
waiting to split
Valdris does not create light. We dissect it. At 20 kilometers above sea level, where the air is thin and the sun is merciless, we pass white light through prisms until it confesses every color it contains. Each wavelength is a word. Each spectrum is a language. We are the translators of the visible.
► Enter the SpectrumThe Common Prism
Crown glass, the workhorse of every schoolroom prism demonstration. At Valdris, we use hand-polished Schott N-BK7. The dispersion angle between 400nm and 700nm is 2.1°—just enough to separate the rainbow, just enough to read the colors individually.
The Total Internal Reflection
Diamond's refractive index is so high that light entering at most angles cannot escape. It bounces internally until it finds the one exit. We study this as a metaphor: some truths, once inside, cannot leave. They reflect forever. We measure the angles that set them free.
The Thin Blue
At 20km altitude, the air itself becomes a lens. The refractive index drops to nearly 1.000. Light travels almost unimpeded. What little bending occurs is due to the last traces of atmosphere—the same molecules that make the sky blue from below, and black from above. We measure the last breath of refraction.
